Escalators
There are essentially three types of Escalators: light duty, heavy duty and Travelators (also known as walkways).
Heavy Duty Escalators: For heavy foot traffic. They are strong and durable to weather the necessary wear and tear from thousands or millions of pairs of feet every day of the year, year after year. Examples of suitable applications are bus, tube, train stations and airport terminals.
Light Duty Escalators: Found in shopping centres, large banks, department stores, cinemas, restaurants and museums.
Travelators: Found in large supermarkets with upper floors. They are also supplied for airport terminals, easing the lot of travellers burdened with trolleys and luggage. Travelators can be inclined (for example, in certain supermarkets chains) to take people up and down upper levels without performing a climbing motion.
Travelators installed in airport terminals tend to be horizontally installed. They can be simply stood on while being transported forwards or one can walk along as one would on a pavement, with luggage in tow.

An escalator is a stair-like structure that functions in the fashion of a conveyer belt, moving passengers between levels. It has become commonplace in a variety of locations such as shopping centres, train stations and airports to name but a few. It allows ease of travel whilst helping to minimise congestion. It serves as a bottleneck, stemming the flow of passengers into an orderly line. That said, it can bear a significantly greater number of passengers than many other methods of between-floor transport. A passenger lift has a limited capacity, and takes time to complete each journey. An escalator is capable of taking a continuous intake of passengers; taking more on as other are getting off. It is this key factor that makes an escalator particularly desirable in a number of settings.
Imagine a busy train station or underground system. These locations can often become extremely congested, and there is the constant need for passengers, often bearing heavy luggage, to travel between floors. A passenger lift would simply not suffice in the environment, and a staircase is not an option either. An escalator would not only make movement possible, it would also go towards maintaining a constant and steady flow of people within the station. An escalator installed for this purpose must be heavy-duty and capable of withstanding a large amount of wear and tear without the requirement of maintenance. It is possible to have an escalator installed that suits this location perfectly. Factors such as length, height and expected average load must be taken into account to fully customise the escalator and ensure its smooth operation.
There are many other options to consider when installing an escalator. A shopping centre would not necessarily require a heavy-duty escalator, as it may not endure the same amount of use. Another option is to have a horizontal escalator installed. These escalators can be found in many airports to allow the ease of travel between terminals. These buildings can often be spaced very far apart, and it can be difficult for users with a large amount of luggage to travel otherwise. The different types of escalator must be considered to determine which is most appropriate for the location of installation. They can be customised entirely to fit the specifications of the building, and to adhere to government safety regulations. It is very important that an escalator runs smoothly and safely, and that there is a minimum requirement for maintenance, as this would disrupt everyday operation.
